Mamen Pérez, an example of an entrepreneurial woman

To commemorate International Women’s Day, we wanted to interview our founder, Mamen Pérez, as an example of entrepreneurship.

  • What motivated you to start the Carmela Decoración project? Turning my passion into a profession. Immersed in the textile world, I saw a need in the sector for a professional company that offered quality textiles with interior design consulting services. I saw the opportunity to combine my professional experience with my passion, and I couldn’t let it pass by.
  • What tasks do you perform from your managerial position? My main role is to always have my “radar” on: This radar tries to detect discrepancies but also works to capture trends, ideas, new products, business opportunities, and to identify the needs of my team, ensuring that everyone gives their best and that the entire team moves in the same direction.I like what I do and enjoy it day by day. Overcoming the challenges that arise and growing as a person give meaning to this exciting task.
  • How is the current health crisis affecting you? We are going through times where my team and I feel alone, fighting against an unknown enemy: uncertainty. Our motivation is to work and sow seeds for the future. We take this moment to reflect, innovate, and improve. This crisis should not make us lose sight of our sustainability goals. When all this is over, we will be more prepared than ever.
  • What do you think about the “empowerment” of women that is increasing in the highest levels of responsibility in companies? Women still don’t have the direct helm. They increasingly have decision-making power, but representative positions are reserved for men due to many circumstances, and I do not believe at all that it is because the male leadership style is better than the female one. It is true that the position of women in companies is increasing but very slowly. It is a matter of time, but I believe we are moving towards a natural equalization since many women today are qualified to take on positions of responsibility.
  • What particularities do you see in a woman’s way of leading? I don’t like clichés, neither positive nor negative, but I do appreciate differences that, while not exclusive, are more pronounced in the leadership style generally developed by women. The team takes precedence over individualistic attitudes, and therefore, collaboration matters more than personal success, which enhances the quality and work environment. We are not obsessed with success but with doing things well daily, which will probably lead to success in the long run.
