100% sustainable hotels thanks to Carmela Martí’s textiles

At Carmela Martí, we present the first collection of hospitality textiles, Posidonia, made from recycled fibers sourced from plastic containers collected from seas and oceans, as well as recycled cotton fibers.

This collection encompasses all types of decorative fabrics that can be found in a hotel, from sheers and blackout curtains to bedspreads, cushions and plaids, meeting the same stringent technical requirements that the sector demands. Additionally, these fabrics have been accredited with the Global Recycle Standard certificate, which guarantees their sustainable origin and production process throughout the entire supply chain, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the 2030 Agenda of the European Union. Until now, there were some sustainable fabrics on the market, but they were not specifically designed for the hospitality sector. This collection provides fabrics with the same technical specifications necessary for hospitality, such as a range of flame-retardant sheers and blackout curtains. “This is a collection of sustainable decorative textiles that allows us to close the consumption loop without losing an ounce of design or functionality,” explains Carmela Martí.

The fabrics are made from two types of recycled fibers in different proportions. On one hand, polyester comes from plastic bottles and containers made of PET (polyethylene terephthalate), often sourced from waste found in seas and oceans. The other fiber is recycled cotton, produced from garments made of this material that are cut into small pieces, from which a new fiber is extracted. The main advantage of these textiles is that they not only address one of the major problems of our planet, plastic pollution, but their manufacturing process also helps reduce the environmental impact. For instance, since the recycled cotton is produced from garments classified by color, it is not necessary to dye the fabric again, resulting in significant water savings and a reduction in the chemical elements from dyes.

This collection has been named Posidonia in reference to the qualities of the Mediterranean seaweed of the same name, which, in addition to having immense properties for preserving its natural habitat, represents the benefits these new fabrics have on the environment.

Just as Posidonia is fundamental for the preservation of the seabed, Carmela Martí wants this collection to be a pillar in the transition towards more sustainable textile interior design.
